Remember that awesome table (cum computer) that Tony Stark had? I bet you’ve wanted one ever since you saw the movie. I know I have been lusting after it. Then again, the same can be said of Iron Man himself. But I digress.
Your dreams of a touchscreen table computer is becoming reality, albeit falling way short of what Iron Man had at his disposal. We have heard of surface computers before, but the result of the collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft might just blow everything out of the water!
Called the SUR40, this Microsoft Surface computer boasts of a 40-inch screen that is no less than full high definition with a resolution of 1920×1080 that will make your eyes pop out. It runs on an AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-Core Processor 2.9GHz, which works with the AMD HD6750M GPU. Of course, touch technology is incorporated, making your favorite tablet look puny. Literally.
The touchscreen capabilities are made possible through the implementation of what is called PixelSense technology. According to Physorg ((Physorg Article)), what PixelSense technology does is to give “LCD panels the power to see without the use of camera.” Vision-based interaction takes place without cameras; the Individual pixels in the display see what’s touching the screen and that information is immediately processed and interpreted, passing the information on to the application. PixelSense allows a LCD display to recognize fingers, hands, and objects placed on the screen.”
And with 2 million sensors built in, PixelSense has got a lot of power to back it up!
Another cool thing about the SUR40 – as if a 40-inch touchscreen device weren’t cool enough – is that it can recognize 50 touch points at the same time. Not that I foresee you wanting to share the SUR40 with 50 people in one go, but that is a heck of a lot of simultaneous users!
In any case, the target market for the SUR40 seems to be the business and professional sectors, so you might not be ready for the hefty price tag that it is probably going to come with. Just in case you do have the cash to burn, however, wait till the early part of 2012 when the SUR40 is slated to be released. In the meantime, you can preorder one.
