Here’s an interesting and deeper look into the most active users of Twitter which incidentally accounts for only 5% of of 75% of all Twitter activity according to Sysomos. The findings of the report were based from the 11.5 million accounts indexed by Twitter and the 5% active users represent Twitter users who have posted the most number of tweets.According to the Sysomos Report 32% of all the tweets posted by the 5% active users were made by machine bots. These machine bots have posted more than 150 tweets/day. This does not even include those machine bots that posted less than 150 times/day. For those not in the loop, tweets posted by machine bots are more automatic way of tweeting messages on Twitter which were carried out by web apps set-up by users themselves. The study also found out that 24% or one-quarter of all tweets posted during last month were in fact generated by these machine bots.
Among the things that we discovered about the most active Twitter users are that:
- Of the most active Twitter users updating more than 150 times/day, nearly all of them are bots operated by sources such as hotels offering deals, regional and national news services, regional weather services, the top news within Digg, games, anim services, tags within del.icio.us and financial aggregators. These very active bots account for one-quarter of all tweets.
Other points discovered by the Sysomos study showed the ff:
- Twitter users with more than 50,000 followers were mostly celebrities
- 60.6% of the most active Twitter users are located in the U.S.
- 6.9% of the most active Twitter users are located in the UK
- 4.7% of the most active Twitter users are located in Japan
- 4.3% in Canada
- male users acount for 54%, female users account for 46%
- 88% of the 5% most active Twitter users have never missed checking their Twitter account before starting their day.
- 48% of the most active Twitter users have more than 100 followers
44% of the most active Twitter users have more than 100 friends - 33% of the most active users are new users
