Guess What the Top 10 Most Popular Facebook Apps Are?
Come on, give it your best shot! I am sure, though, that even without having to really think, most of you will get the answer correctly. That ubiquitous FarmVille is still the King of Facebook applications – no surprise about that! The real-time simulation game where anyone can pretend to be a farmer has made addicts of countless people around the world. Indeed, there was a point when it was said that the number of Farmville farmers exceeded the number of farmers in the entire United States! Zynga really did hit a goldmine in that app! Furthermore, other popular Zynga games are scattered all over the top 10 most popular Facebook apps list – Texas HoldEm Poker, FrontierVille and Café World.
Here is something that might surprise you, though. Would you believe that the second most popular Facebook application is Microsoft’s instant messenger app, Windows Live Messenger? To be honest, I didn’t even know that there was an app for this, but apparently, since its launch in August, more than 10 million people have connected Facebook to Windows Live. Pretty impressive!
ReadWriteWeb posted the full list of top 10 Facebook apps yesterday:
- FarmVille
- Windows Live Messenger
- Phrases
- FrontierVille
- Texas HoldEm Poker
- Bejeweled Blitz
- Cafe World
- Mafia Wars Game
- Birthday Calendar
- Treasure Isle
Now try “scoring” yourself. How many of these apps do you use on a regular basis? I currently use 1 out of 10, but I have to be honest and say that I used to be a slave to app number 7 and app number 8. And, no, I don’t play FarmVille. 😉
Catholic? Do You Have These iPhone Apps?
I am sure you’ve heard of the current Pope’s visit to the UK. While we have devouts on one end of the spectrum, there are also critics on the other end. It’s a fact of life – you can’t please everyone.
This post is for Catholics who lean towards the developments in technology, courtesy of the Telegraph. They put together a list of iPhone apps that would certainly catch your fancy. I am not a Catholic, but I would be interested in getting hold of these apps if I had an iPhone/iPod Touch for cultural/educational value.
Popes
For $0.99, you can get this app which will give you all the information you need on the Roman Popes – from Saint Peter to 2010. Think about it, even non-Catholics just might find this kind of information useful.
Way of the Cross
Even though I follow a different faith, I have heard of the Way/Stations of the Cross many times. This app serves as a guide to all the stations of the Cross and also includes passages from the Scriptures. It should prove to be useful come Lent.
Holy Rosary Deluxe
Think of this app as high tech Rosary Beads. This app can take you through the whole Rosary, complete with tactile feedback via the vibrate function.
These are only three of the apps that the Telegraph listed, and I am sure there are more out there. In keeping with the spirit of the Pope’s visits, then I suggest downloading these apps for your iPhone/iPod Touch. After all, technology doesn’t have to clash with faith, does it?
Three Sensible Facebook Apps
Facebook – you either love it or you hate it. No matter how much some people might hate this social networking site, though, there is no denying that it can be addictive. And, for those who are so into it, there’s no stopping them from being online practically all day.
Even those who are certified Facebook addicts have to admit that the social networking site has its downsides. Its applications, for one – they are so many and more often than not, useless and irritating. I have to say, though, that there are some Facebook apps that are useful and actually make sense. Let’s take a look at three apps – two I would recommend to any friend, and one that I need advice on.
Good Reads
As the name implies, it’s all about books. In this day and age where watching TV shows and movies (or listening to music) is considered more convenient than reading a good old book, it is refreshing to see an app about books. Good Reads helps you keep track of what you have been reading, together with your friends. As with other Facebook apps, the joy is in sharing. You get to rate your books and write your thoughts about them; and then you can share ideas with friends. Call it a virtual book club if you will. There’s a similar Facebook app called Visual Bookshelf, which I actually use more often. The idea is the same, although there are fewer users than Good Reads.
Travel Buddy
For people who like to travel, there is no better app than this. (If you find one, let me know!) Organize trips and share photos, experiences, and more using this app. You can tag your real life travel buddy; reminisce about your past trips; and plan your future adventures together!
Language Exchange
This last app, I am still thinking if I should use or not. The premise is very attractive – meet people who can teach you a foreign language, and share your own language as well. I am unsure about the privacy issues, though. Does anyone use this app?
Five Useful BlackBerry Apps for Moms on Mother’s Day
Thinking of giving your mom a bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day? Forget it. Your mom is not going to use it and will most probably just let it wither away, especially if your mom is a BlackBerry user. Come to think of it, why not just give her some useful apps that she can enjoy using on her BlackBerry device.
We’ve scoured the BlackBerry App World in search of the most useful app that moms who use BlackBerry will appreciate and enjoy and we’ve found these five apps.

Facebook to Stop Sending Apps Notifications, Thankfully!
Although you can always add a friend’s updates on Facebook it’s still annoying whenever that friend used another application which you have not hidden on your profile before. So, you go out and hide it again to remove the noise that has been cluttering app your profile. Starting Monday, you will not have to go through each every one of those applications notifications and hide them. Facebook will stop sending those notifications, finally!
So, how could you then communicate with your friends to tell them about this cool new Facebook apps that you’re currently spending your time on? The Facebook Developers Blog suggested that you use counters instead, set news within the dashboards to share lightweight messages and activate the extended permissions to email users and send richer and more engaging messages.
Facebook is also planning to change how app requests function and how Facebook profiles will be displayed, all to make Facebook a pleasant, less noisy social networking platform.
I would have to commend them for doing this, despite the fact that it might actually turn some users away, especially those who enjoy using all those apps and telling their friends about them. Who knows, some Facebook users might actually miss those notifications about their friends needing this or that on Mafia Wars. Or notifications about the fact they have no watered their plants on FarmVille, and many other time-wasting activities that they are doing on Facebook.
So, will you be disappointed or happy about this announcement or what?
