Just a little update to remind us all that MySpace is still alive and carrying out its social networking services. Paid Content is reporting that what use to be the most popular social network will soon be launching a mail service that would give users who will sign up their own “@myspace.com” addresses. The articles further reports that MySpace will be rolling this new service gradually in the coming days and will only go full blast towards the end of the year. In fact, some members were already give access to the webmail and are not testing the service.
No definite words yet on how this webmail service will be rolled out to MySpace’s current 130 million members worldwide. It might make it available first to its U.S. members but even them are far too many at 700 million.
But the question is what good will this email service do MySpace in terms of catching up with Facebook’s growing popularity and success? Well for one, it will somehow encourage users to use the service more often since the “@myspace.com” would have their names on it. It’s like Facebook’s vanity URLs for profile pages. MySpace has been implementing those vanity URLs in their member profile pages long before Facebook did.
So realizing that Facebook had somewhat implemented the same, MySpace is playing more clever this time by extending the vanity URLs to members’ email service.
MySpace’s email service is scheduled to be unveiled on Thursday. You better start thinking of the coolest account name that you will use for MySpace’s webmail service.
